Q&A

Q1: What are the research areas available?

A1: Biochemical technology R&D Center has four main goals of development:

   (1) Molecule production and purification

   (2) Establishment and analysis of biomedical testing technology

   (3) Net-zero carbon emissions and green energy technology development

   (4) Circular economy and recycling of valuable materials

Q2: Is it possible to conduct animal researches here?

A2: Our school does not have an animal experiment center, and animal experiments cannot be conducted here. However, animal research can be carried out at partnership organizations like Chang Gung University and Chang Gung Hospital.

Q3: Can I conduct recombinant DNA experiments here?

A3: Yes, you can. Protein synthesis and purification in the form of recombinant DNA are the most proficient projects at the center.

Q4: What equipment is available here?

A4: Since the 2011 academic year, our center has successively purchased high-end advanced equipment to improve our facility. These include:

(1) QuantStudio™ 3 and 5 Real-Time PCR Systems

(2) CyFlow® Cube 8

(3) Optical microscope and imaging system

(4) FluorChem system (FCM)

(5) ImageXpress Pico Automated Cell Imaging System

(6) Polymerase chain reaction instrument

(7) ECHO revolve R4

(8) Renishaw inVia Qontor

Q5:When was the center established?

A5:Thanks to the full support of the Ministry of Education in 1996, the center established a key trial production downstream biochemical separation laboratory for the biotechnology industry, and established a biochemical engineering technology research and development center.

Q6: Where can I find more information about the Center?

A6: You can visit our website at https://bioeng.mcut.edu.tw/?Lang=en.

Q7: What safety equipment does the center provide?

A7: The center's provides the following safety equipment:

(1) Goggles

(2) Class C protective clothing

(3) Absorbent cotton

(4) Acid and alkali resistant gloves

(5) First aid kit (cotton swabs, sterilized gauze, betadine, paper tape, Band-Aid)

(6) Gas detection system

Q8: What are the relevant regulations with regards to performing experiments?

A8: (1) During the experiment time, proper work clothes and work shoes should be worn

according to the regulations, jewelry should not be worn, and hair must be tied-up.

(2) Before operating the machines, equipment and experimental products, you should read the relevant manuals and be familiar with the safety guidelines, and follow proper procedures.

(3) Students should pay attention to their safety at all times during the experiment. Students are not allowed to operate any machinery or equipment not associated with the experiment without the prior consent of the teacher or administrator.

 (4) During the internship, the necessary personal safety and health protective equipment must be worn as needed, and the safety regulations for various operations must be followed.

 (5) Raw materials, semi-finished products and wastes of all dangerous and harmful substances in the laboratory must be placed out of harm’s way, and must be stored in the designated location. These items must not be removed from the laboratory without permission.

(6) The operation of volatile chemicals should be strictly carried out in the exhaust cabinet.

(7) Ventilation and lighting equipment must be turned on during the experiment.

(8) Mechanical equipment and tools of safety and health protection devices must not be dismantled or rendered ineffective arbitrarily. When an equipment is dismantled or loses its effectiveness, students should report it immediately.

(9) Waste materials, semi-finished products and garbage generated during experiments should be properly disposed at designated areas.

(10) When leaving the laboratory, the water, electricity, gas, doors and windows should be checked and turned off. The person in charge of the internship laboratory should check for tidiness after the experiment is over.

Q9: In what areas has the Biochemical Technology R&D Center focused its development in recent years?

A9:The short-term goals of our center are as follows:

  1. Spectrum or reaction analysis in database building.
  2. Development of biomedical materials for nerve repair.
  3. Use appropriate catalysts to transform organic molecules.
  4. AI analysis database.
  5. To maintain or develop cooperation with Chang Gung University, Chang Gung University of Science and Technology, Chang Gung Hospital, Nanya Plastic, Taiwan Chemical and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and the National Animal Center.
  6. Facilitate internationalization through by cooperating with Europe, America and Japan to improve technology, and by cooperating with Southeast Asian countries to jointly develop rich and unique natural resources.

Q10: Does the center have any international cooperation program?

A10: Yes, our center requires many member teachers to participate in international cooperation projects, and there are many foreign students and exchange students studying in the center.
